This tutorial help to install Fedora Core 9 64bit in dual boot with Windows Vista SP1 32bit on a Acer Apire 7720G laptop with Intel Core Duo T7300 EM64T. Here a video showing Compiz fusion and NVIDIA capabilities.

Install dual boot Vista SP1 + Fedora 9

Installation preparation

  • Boot Windows Vista SP1 (already pre-installed)
  • Download Fedora Core9 x86_64 ISO image from RedHat-Get Fedora
  • Burn a 4GB DVD with this image
  • Remove D: partition
  • Optionally resize C: NTFS partition to minimum (57GB)
  • Download EasyBCD 1.7.2 from Neosmart Technologies
  • Install EasyBCD 1.7.2
  • Reboot and change on BIOS the boot priority rising CD/DVD to first position

Install Fedora

  • Boot from CD/DVD with Fedora Core 9
  • Make new Linux partions leaving two NTFS partition (Acer backup + Windows Vista NTFS)
    • /dev/sda1 NTFS "Acer backup" partition
    • /dev/sda2 NTFS "Windows Vista SP1" partition
    • /dev/sda3 ext3 "Boot loader" partition (TO FORMAT)
    • /dev/sda4 VolMgr "Fedora Core 9" + "Swap" partition (TO FORMAT)
  • Set anaconda to install boot loader on /dev/sda3 (not MBR)
  • Select all optional software you want
  • After finished Fedora installation reboot with Windows Vista

Post-installation

  • Run EasyBCD and click "Add/Remove Entries", select Linux tab, select type GRUB, select drive "Partition 2 (Linux Native - 0 GB)
  • Using EastBCD change priority of "NeoSmart Linux" before "Microsoft Windows Vista" and click "Save" button
  • Reboot: Windows Boot Loader shows you "NeoSmart Linux" and "Microsoft Windows Vista", select "NeoSmart Linux" and press Enter
  • Fedora core 9 starts successfully (but Compiz don't start yet)
  • Connect fedora to internet (using a Ethernet cable to your ADSL router) and run "Update System" to download and install the lastest packages
  • Run as root: yum --enablerepo=livna install kmod-nvidia
  • Reboot linux
  • Run "Desktop effects" and enable Compiz

Install additional packages

  • Open as root a terminal window and run these commands:
  • rpm -Uvh http://linuxdownload.adobe.com/adobe-release/adobe-release-i386-1.0-1.noarch.rpm
  • yum install flash-plugin nspluginwrapper.{i386,x86_64} pulseaudio-libs.i386 libflashsupport.i386
  • yum install regionset libdvdcss
  • yum install vlc mplayer mplayer-gui smplayer gnome-mplayer
  • regionset
    • Would you like to change the region setting of your drive? [y/n]:y
    • Enter the new region number for your drive [1..8]:2 [to set EUROPE]
    • New mask: 0xFFFFFFFD, correct? [y/n]:y
  • Download luvcview-20070512.tar.gz
  • tar xvf luvcview-20070512.tar.gz
  • cd luvcview-20070512
  • make
  • make install
  • On desktop click right button and choose "Create Launcher":
    • name: luvcview
    • command : luvcview -f yuv
  • yum install smart smart-gui
  • yum -y install madwifi kmod-madwifi
  • vi /etc/modprobe.conf

  • Run "Network Device Control" and click "Configure":
    • click "Configure", in the "Network Configuration" window click "New"
    • select "Wireless connection", select "Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG"
    • configure your wireless connection with Mode=Managed, Rate=11M, Channel=11
    • set "Controlled by Network Manager" "Activate device when computer starts" "Allow all users to enable and disable the device"
  • Download the static version of Linux Skype skype_static-1.4.0.118
  • tar xjvf skype_static-1.4.0.118.tar.bz2 -C /usr/share/
  • Download libsigc++20-2.0.17-1.i386.rpm
  • cd /tmp
  • rpm2cpio libsigc++20-2.0.17-1.i386.rpm | cpio -idv
  • cp -R /tmp/usr/lib/libsigc-2.0.so.0.0.0 /usr/share/skype_static-1.4.0.118/libsigc-2.0.so.0
  • vi /usr/bin/skype
  • #!/bin/bash # export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=.:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH cd /usr/share/skype_static-1.4.0.118 ./skype
  • chmod 755 /usr/bin/skype

Install Windows XP in a virtual machine

  • Run "Virtual Machine Manager"
  • Double click in localhost and choose "New" button
  • Choose "Fully virtualized" "i686" "qemu" then "Forward"
  • Choose "Local istall media" "Windows" "Windows XP"
  • Confirm image file path and size of 4GB
  • Confirm 512MB of memory and 1 VCPU
  • Create VM
  • Install Windows Xp from .iso
  • To make sound and usb devices work, you have create a customize launcher
    • On desktop click right button and choose "Create Launcher":
    • name: Windows XP
    • command : su -c "qemu -m 512 -soundhw all -usb -usbdevice host:003.004 -cdrom /dev/cdrom /var/lib/libvirt/images/windows_xp_sp2.img"
  • Add -usbdevice host:xxx.yyy for each USB device you want to share with this partition
  • Use command lsusb to detect your USB devices

Migrate Outlook mails to Evolution

  • Download libpst-0.6.14-1.fc10.x86_64.rpm
  • rpm -i libpst-0.6.14-1.fc10.x86_64.rpm
  • mkdir mymailboxtree
  • cd mymailboxtree
  • readpst outlook.pst
  • Run Evolution
  • Choose "File"->"Import"->"Import a single file"
  • Select the extracted Outlook folder in "mbox" format
  • Select destination folder in Evolution then import
