This tutorial help to install Fedora Core 10 64bit in dual boot with Windows Vista SP1 32bit on a Acer Apire 6930G laptop with Intel Core Duo T9400 EM64T. Here a video showing 6930G details.

Install dual boot Vista SP1 + Fedora 10

Installation preparation

• Boot Windows Vista SP1 (already pre-installed)
• Download Fedora Core 10 x86_64 ISO image from RedHat-Get Fedora
• Burn a 4GB DVD with this image
• Remove D: partition
• Optionally resize C: NTFS partition to minimum (72GB)
• Download EasyBCD 1.7.2 from Neosmart Technologies
• Install EasyBCD 1.7.2
• Reboot and change on BIOS the boot priority rising CD/DVD to first position. Save and exit.

Install Fedora

• Boot from CD/DVD with Fedora Core 10
• You have to select "Create custom layout" and organize your partion geometry as follow:
• /dev/sda1 NTFS "Acer backup" partition (DO NOT REMOVE - LOCKED BY BIOS)
• /dev/sda2 NTFS "Windows Vista SP1" partition 72GB
• /dev/sda4 Extended
• /dev/sda5 / ext3 206GB (TO FORMAT)
• /dev/sda6 swap 4GB (TO FORMAT)
• /dev/sda3 NTFS 4GB "Compaq Setup" (DO NOT REMOVE - LOCKED BY BIOS)
• Set anaconda to install boot loader on /dev/sda5 (not MBR) and use /dev/sda5 (Fedora)
• Select all optional software you want
• After finished Fedora installation reboot with Windows Vista

Post-installation

• Run EasyBCD and click "Add/Remove Entries", select Linux tab, select type GRUB, select drive "Partition 2 (Linux Native - 202 GB)"
• Using EastBCD change priority of "NeoSmart Linux" before "Microsoft Windows Vista" and click "Save" button
• Reboot: Windows Boot Loader shows you "NeoSmart Linux" and "Microsoft Windows Vista", select "NeoSmart Linux" and press Enter
• Fedora core 10 starts successfully, Wifi and Cristal Eye work but Compiz don't start yet.
• rpm -ivh http://download1.rpmfusion.org/free/fedora/rpmfusion-free-release-stable.noarch.rpm \ http://download1.rpmfusion.org/nonfree/fedora/rpmfusion-nonfree-release-stable.noarch.rpm
• rpm --import /etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-rpmfusion-*
• yum install kmod-nvidia regionset libdvdcss
• regionset
• Would you like to change the region setting of your drive? [y/n]:y
• Enter the new region number for your drive [1..8]:2 [to set EUROPE]
• New mask: 0xFFFFFFFD, correct? [y/n]:y
• Reboot your system
• Run "Desktop effects" and enable Compiz
• Refer to this guide to install Firefox 64bit Flash plugin
• vi /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf and add "options snd-hda-intel model=auto"
• Download and install Java 64bit with firefox plugin
• update-alternatives --install /usr/bin/java java /usr/java/latest/bin/java 99
• update-alternatives --config java
• rm /usr/lib64/mozilla/plugins/libjavaplugin.so
• update-alternatives --install /usr/lib64/mozilla/plugins/libjavaplugin.so libjavaplugin.so /usr/java/jdk1.6.0_12/jre/lib/amd64/libnpjp2.so 99
• update-alternatives --config libjavaplugin.so
• Update your system to avoid freeze due to Compiz-X server-Nvidia driver
